The Oregon Trip

IMG_1227 We had a road trip! I grew up in Oregon, and it was about time to visit the place. Mr. Wood had to see if it really was the over glorified sanctuary I always described it as.

Turns out it is.

We left Sunday evening, which led to our first “sleeping in a rest-stop” experience. This one appropriately called “dead man’s pass”.

We drove through the gorge to get into the state, which made our first touristy stop “Horse tail falls”. Sure we could of gone onto the more popular, famous Multnomah type falls, but after Idaho anything seems breathtakingly gorgeous. And who needs crowds?

IMG_1235

The fresh air, greenery and peacefulness of moving water is perfect for healing a weary travelers soul.

IMG_1238

After that we slowly made  our way to Corvallis. Maybe a little to eager lay down straight we stopped at Avery park for a nap.

The followed by a lovely meal at a friend’s house and then one of my favorite less known places near my home-town Corvallis. Kings Valley is best viewed near sunset and is the purest form of “my Oregon” that I know of. “My Oregon” being the Oregon I remember growing in, running in, driving on gravel roads for hours as my family explored every nook and cranny. Just forest.

IMG_1244

Beazell Forest is always my first stop in Kings valley. It has some lovely moderate hikes straight into old forest, complete with bubbling brook. It also has this quaint empty house.

  IMG_1245

After a quick tromp we headed towards Fort Hoskins. Which includes a very old orchard and some gorgeous views.

Day 2: a tromp in downtown Corvallis.

IMG_1262

Okay. So I only have one picture of my teenage stomping grounds. But who cares? We were having to much fun. The Carlson’s treated us to lunch at American Dream pizza. The website makes it look kitsch. But it is a cool kid staple of Corvallis life. Pizza that is so good I won’t even try to explain. But just know it is worth it.

Day 3: Portland, the city

We used airbnb.com to find accommodations in Portland for 2 days. The owners were kind enough to let us use their bikes. So we started off day 3 with a 14 mile bike ride twisting around highways, towns and forests on the outer edge of Portland. Then we set off into the big city starting with a lunch at Burger Guild. You probably know Portland Oregon is one of those “hip” cities. Don’t roll your eyes. We all know if it wasn’t for “hip” we wouldn’t have cool new forms of popular food. Take the Food truck. Without hipster cities the food truck would of never developed into more than just hotdogs and falafel.

IMG_1276

Burger Guild. I don’t even know why we were compelled to find this among dozens of others but it was so worth it. Packed in a parking lot dedicated to food trucks, this under-reviewed gem has my new favorite burger. Shoot. I don’t even know what it is called. But all his burgers (yes it is just one man) are stuffed with delicious. Mine had kalamata olives, feta and peppers. Mr. Wood’s was filled with Muenster cheese, mushroom and some spicy pickled pepper mix. So good! If I had to build a pro/con list of moving to Portland Oregon, Burger Guild would weigh heavily in "Pro’s” column.

IMG_1279

Oh what is that? Sweet potato fries dusted with fresh herbs? Oh thank you burger guild. Thank you very much.

I am tempted to turn the rest of this post into a food blog. But I won’t. Let’s move on.

IMG_1283Did you know you can take any public transportation around Portland Oregon all day for only $5? Yeah. You can. But Mr. Wood and I are crazy and drove in. Bonus, we got to stop by the mall. The train is actually quite nice though, and we rode that across the bridge.

We forgot to take pictures most of the day, because I just love wandering through a big city. And it is so fun to do with your spouse. Portland is part old, part new, part creepy, part gorgeous, so perfect for exploring.

We spent the afternoon walking through several districts, getting lost in Powell's book store. Stopping at fountains and parks and anthropologie. Oh, Boy’s Fort or “Manthropology” was a new favorite of mine. Part collection of aesthetically pleasing items for the male, part botanical shop. It smelled really good. Tired feet and Eye weary we meandered back towards place to rest, only to be deterred by ice-cream. “Salt and Straw” ice-cream to be specific. So creamy, so worth it.

With that, I will end. The rest of the trip will have to be documented in part 2. But don’t worry, we aren’t dragging this out into a trilogy.

Enjoying the Locals, and their movies

This one seems odd, since Blair Sterret is really more a friend then a neighbor. But boy, he is someone you should meet.

A while ago Mr. Wood and I stopped by for Blair’s practically weekly “Incredibly Strange Movie Night”.

I know what you are thinking. No, this isn’t a whole bunch of hipster college students getting together because someone has a copy of “Dark Crystal”. These are actually the strangest movies known to earth. And, Blair isn’t just some random hipster. He is the curator of the Lost Media Archive. He is the expert. ISMN is over a decade old you know.

Here is the Lost Media Archive official statement:

LMA is a Utah-based collection of mondo/ kitsch/ cult/ ephemeral/ experimental/ historical/ obsolete/ forgotten/ unearthed audio-visual and textual documents. LMA is also a resource for those who cling to bygone media formats. The LMA was founded by Blair Sterrett and works together with loaf-i productions, the Free Form Film Festival and Salt Lake City Film Festival to arrange screenings, viewings, and concerts. The LMA also promotes and initiates the creation of new and unusual films, albums, performative projects, and book events. We accept donations of any and all projection, recording, and filming devices. When possible, we maintain these machines for use by recordists and filmmakers. (We now curate over 35,000 films.)

image

This is what we watched last night. “The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies”, for which ISMN was named after. So, you see, it was a special night. As we learned from Mr. Sterret, Ray Steckler (director) doesn’t use a script. So his movies are essentially made up as they go along, depending on materials available, what he gets bored with and so on. Yes, it was ridiculous. But somehow charming. We got to watch a bonus interview of Ray Steckler before the film. Apparently he gave it the ridiculous name because he thought bigger name, bigger movie.

If you want to see Blair's archive or partake of his extensive strange movie knowledge, look at the Lost Media Archive site. All year he is also doing an ISMN show once a month at Brewvies movie pub in SLC (which are free!) This month is going to be incredible (if you are interested in George Melias, or just wonderful things). Find out about the film here on the facebook page. Check it out tomorrow! July 31st.

Here is a trailer for all the shows he is showing at Brewvies in 2012.

Which sums up ISMN pretty well.

If you are at all curious, you should go to one of his shows. I can honestly say, that no matter how odd the movie was, I’ve never regretted going to ISMN. I can also say that Blair Sterret is possibly the nicest, kindest, and most mysterious man in Utah County. Plus, he has the best stories to tell about all the incredibly strange things.

Ridiculous

Why?

First: I wore this to the grocery store today. I’ve finally satisfied my recent and intense desire to wear stripes.

My beautiful picture

Anyways, I had to buy another watermelon because of my next point.

Second: Mr. Wood and I are addicted to the Watermelon Milkshake. To be honest I winced when I first saw the recipe. Water+melon+milk seems wrong. But I was desperate to use up a less-than-delicious and more-than-ripe watermelon we had. So I whipped it up for dinner. Mr. Wood almost died because he apparently grew up on watermelon milk. Who knew?

Want to know the truth?

It is delicious.

Like, forget nostalgia, and it is still delicious. We are having it again tonight. That makes 3 times in 2 weeks guys.

My beautiful picture

It is freezing cold, fresh, creamy, light and probably healthy. I don’t know guys. And it is the most glorious pink color.

Watermelon Milk Shake: Serves 2

3ish cups of chopped watermelon

1 cup milk

1 tsp vanilla

up to 1 tbsp sugar

*Freeze watermelon chunks beforehand on a cookie sheet so they don’t stick together.

1. Put ingredients in a blender.

2. Blend that fool up

3. Add more milk/sugar to taste

Enjoying The Locals

Saturday Mr. Wood and I got to roam around our little town. We went to the Provo farmers Market. Farmers Market’s are my favorite places.

I love strolling through the booths and talking to all types of people. I love the shy old man who sells seasonal fruit out of the back of his truck. I love the weird artsy hipster people. I love those happy little ladies selling bows and tutu skirts while balancing a baby on their knee. I love the bread place where the people have long hair and give you samples of asiago cheese loafs. I love that one person doing face painting and henna tattoos. I love the bike collective kid just sitting there waiting to talk to you. I love the old guys selling wooden toys. I love the kid with a mustache and chefs-hat selling waffles. I love those waffles. Everyone is friends at the farmers market.

Here is one young man, and his art, that Mr. Wood and I especially enjoyed this weekend:

Andy Simmons of Rooney Hand Lettering

Basically this Kool Kid makes beautiful words with a lovely black pen and a cheerful smile.

Straight From Heaven Right to You

1*2*3

Andy has a variety of pretty quotes at his shop. I know you all love pretty things. But, you should love these even more—because you are not paying for a print of something he did months ago, every print is freshly handwritten just for you! Don’t we all love honest to goodness original art? So unique prints all around.

You can find Andy at his Etsy Shop, or probably at the farmers market.

Birds

Are so odd.
Did you know that robins can hear worms squirming around in the ground?

Some of our Favorite Things

I felt compelled to document some of our favorite things from this week.

My beautiful picture

Strawberries with every meal.

My beautiful picture

I got these dark chocolate chips at Winco. Not only are they cheaper, but they are delicious!

My beautiful pictureBarefoot running! Really we can only go for little spurts at a time to avoid injury to our weak feet.

Consequently, we are also enjoying feet strengthening exercises via YouTube.

My beautiful picture

Mr. Wood eats handfuls of this stuff dry. I like it wet. Maybe I should feed him more.

My beautiful picture

Also, I have been hoarding glass jars to hold all the bulk food that I buy. I got this lovely huge size jar for like $3 at Michaels. Now our pinto beans have a home!

HPIM5215

Finally, I’m loving this dime ring we found in Mr. Wood’s childhood memories box. He made it in 7th grade in CTE. Now I’m telling everyone that my husband made me this lovely ring when he was in 7th grade. It is a perfect fit!

That’s all of our favorite things this week.
